Monroe County Meals on Wheels

The Monroe County Meals on Wheels organization is badly in need of volunteers. As reported, July 20 2010, on Blue Ridge Communications TV13 news, the current economic situation has resulted in a lack of volunteers needed to deliver meals to the needy in Monroe County, PA.

Begun in 1972, the Meals on Wheels organization of Monroe County is a member of the National Association of Nutrition and Aging Services Program and delivers approximately 90,000 meals each year. Meals, which are planned by a registered dietitian, are modified for specific client needs, such as diabetes or renal deficiencies.

Volunteers operate in teams of 2, one driver and one visitor. Drivers must have a valid driver’s license, drive their own vehicle and meet minimum auto insurance requirements. Visitors are volunteers who bring the meals in to the clients. They are expected to provide a little conversation and friendly encouragement to eat while listening to any questions or concerns the client has.
