Carbon County, PA

Carbon County has to be the most under-rated part of the Poconos. More than 2/3 of Carbon County's 500 square miles are PA State Game and Park Lands. With just under 59,000 residents at the time of the 2000 Census, I guess there just aren't a lot of people to sing its praises.

Located just 90 miles north of the Philadelphia area and 90 miles west of New York City and traversed by both Interstate 80 and the Northeast Extension of the PA Turnpike, the little towns of the county are great for weekend getaways.

This county doesn't seem to have the problem of suburban sprawl.  It has wildlife sprawl.  The abundance of protected land produces a bumper crop of deer, bear, raccoons and other delightful wildlife all very hungry & determined to have a taste of your garden goodies.

Even if your garden survives the snacking of the local fauna, the weather may have a plan for you.  6" of snow in mid-April can knock you out of the fresh lettuce for Memorial Day game.  A May 17th frost can put a wrench in your planting out schedule.

I never had these problems before, you think, back in New Jersey or Long Island or North Carolina, I always planted my tomatoes and peppers out the first weekend in May.
